Music speaks its own magical language. In spite of the Swedish lyrics, Dungen has been honoured and celebrated in the US. Dungen explores a kind a psychedelic folk-rock that has almost remained untouched for more than 30 years – and finds that there are still many unexplored places. This 2005 concert was one step up the ladder towards worldwide success and when Dungen is playing, everyone knows the Swedish language perfectly.

Footage from the official Roskilde Festival 2005 DVD.

To call this a duo almost seems wrong as such a comparison reminds one of a much more low key sonic universe than the clattering garage rock offered by the two guys in Johnossi (consisting of Johan Engelbert and Oskar Bonde or simply John and Ossi). And that is despite the fact that the instrumentation is often limited to just semi-acoustic guitar and drums. However, the ballads coexist alongside the noisy rock songs, and that is where Johnossi distance themselves from other garage rockers by providing proficient guitar playing and emotional song-writing.

Footage from the official Roskilde Festival 2005 DVD.

And, of course, for his very extrovert, energetic live shows.

Brazilian band Skank had the pleasure of opening Orange Stage Saturday afternoon in 2003. Skank was considered one of the most successful pop bands in Brazil at this time, and the four white lads from Belo Horizonte in Southern Brazil had since the early 80s put their steady grip on the Brazilian mainstream. As the name implies, Skank has some ska on top of their pop songs.

“Do you like futjiball? Lets talk about futjiball...!” lead singer Samuel Rosa shouted out in his skewed English to an audience where many were dressed in Brazilian colours and football shirts. People certainly loved futjiball – just as they adored Skank.

A Californian quintet that plays a mix of rock’n’roll, R'n'B, blues and traditional Mexican music. Some would call it texmex, others la mex. Los Lobos has existed for 30 years and has won several awards for the extraordinary hybrid that has become their trademark. A hybrid which in these Latin-favoured times seems deeply rooted, though. In Europe, the band is mostly known for the hit "La Bamba" which made them a success at wedding parties. But it was the American lads' fascination with live shows that gave birth to their success on the international scene.

With great nods of appreciation to bands such as Electric Prunes and The Seeds, the three-piece took the Orange Stage in 2003 under a hot sun. And what to do for a band that is used to standing right next to one another in small, hot rock venues? Well, they simply put their drums and amps right next to another at the centre of the big stage, ignoring the great widths of it all - and then just focused on rocking out.
